93 88 SPL - Cam Follower Timing Pickup

It looks as if the PO replaced the roller at some point. Should there be that much clearance? Any idea if the factory roller was replaced? or is an additional outer sleeve missing? At idle there isn't any pressure from the timer base to pull the roller back. Should there be?

At 3/4 or more throttle the base pulls back a bit but not a lot. I'm considering adding a return spring to keep the existing roller flush with the back side of the cam. Reason being that there is too much slop at idle and I'm worried about it advancing too much at full throttle.

no there should not be play i it. here's picture of my 1988 88spl, it mine has been redone do to a lost bolt.

That little bushing is known for the outer layer crumbling and falling off. Take a good look at yours. It should be approx. 3/8" diameter. If its about a quarter inch then you need a new one.
Didn't notice the pics at first. I think you do need a new bushing.

I ended up picking up a replacement rollrt at my local OMC parts place. Can't recall the price but it didn't break the bank.

That is what I was going to say to replace the bushing and that should fix the slop cleareance problem. Good luck to you. Thanks, Bob
