I am not the big electrical guy on the block and to be honest I havent even started looking for problem.
I was hoping I could get some clues as to what to look for first. I've got the tools and equipment to test everything.
Any input? My master fuse panel is very difficult to access so I am looking for a head start in my trouble shooting.
Thanks guys.

Your tach working? If not, most likely your rectifier/regulator.

Tach working fine and gauge reads exactly what I get with good meter at battery

I have a good battery so its not been a problem but still need to fix. A night run with all lights and stuff on would put a dent in it. 850 amp, 125 amphr battery

Agree that it's likely a rectifier issue. Most of the 88 specials only came with the cheaper rectifier (only.)

took boat out today and had chance to start looking at things. .7v coming from motor as expected but it does run on its own (disconnected from battery. going to find my goofy Seloc manual to see their procedure for checking rectumfryer.

The battery charging system on that engine is separate from the ignition system. There are separate coils for charging and separate coils for ignition. That engine should run fine (ignition) with the battery disconnected, once you get it started. (except you need to have a battery to dissipate the charge that the charge coils produce.) You must have something else going on..

Found broken / disconnected red wire to rectifier. It was rigged by po. Fixed it but still no charge back. When it worked it really worked!!! I would get 16v on gauge. Maybe if fried itself.

I did do an ohm test which appears to show same resistance across both leads in both directions so I guessing that tells the whole story. Need new rectumfryer! How much do they run about? I'll look on I boats parts.

It really worked because you don't have a voltage regulator. In essence it works too well. Not the best thing for the battery. I cant believe they sold them like that.

I agree, I always wondered what all I might be damaging with 16v in system...battery, accys, light bulbs, etc

I may not worry about it for now that I know it does have separate ignition and not running off battery like a car. I have 2 really good deep cycle batteries on board for accessories

I suppose you could install a regulator now. Now that they are common on the used market it might be a worthwhile investment of $30 or so.

Regulators have more leads. I guess we could figure out where to hookem up. Rictifier was only 3 going straight to terminal block

The rectifier is the same. The regulator is just an additional component. You should just be able to add it without any drama.

I believe CDI sells a rectifier/regulator unit now for the previous rectifier only setup , don't know the applications however

regulator/rectifier combo for 88spl runs $139 at my local dealer
rectifier (old round one) runs $60 but I've seen it on line for $30
