Ahoy there, I have a 50HP 93/94 Model Merc Outboard and to me it seems a little smokey, the motor starts first touch, has plenty of power and revs out just like it should, doesnt overheat so to me the engine seems fine, it was last serviced about 20 hours ago.

At idle i notice a bit of 2 stroke smoke coming from it, mainly when its started im wondering if this is normal or not?. I have drained the fuel completely and measured a perfect 50:1 mix with Genuine Quicksilver oil and it was still smokey when I ran it on the weekend. Any ideas? is 50:1 definately the correct oil fuel mix?, anything I can do if its not normal?.

Oh and also when I stop the motor and anchor somewhere I can see fuel/oil sitting on top of the water around the engine.

Im thinking its running a little rich, at idle the motor does kick a little rather than idling perfectly smooth but im told all mercs do this anyway?

Cheers Guys.

I'm not sure I'm following. You're premixing your gas? Isn't that an Injected model? 50:1 is proper for break-in. But once that's done, the oil injection should be all it needs. I also find that certain oil brands smoke worse than others and price seems to make little difference regarding which do and don't. No carbureted 2-stroke Merc idles smoothly. Johnnyrudes are no better. You can adjust the carbs for a smooth idle, but then you lose acceleration. They have to idle rich to get up and go when the throttle is nailed.

Its possible the motor originally was Oil Injected but at the moment there is no oil injection and im premixing. From what your saying it sounds like I have nothing to worry about then which is a relief

hmmmm just incase this thing is Oil Injected, How do I double check? do they have a resevoir inside the cowling or is it external. The fuel tank is connected directly to the engine via what I think is a water/fuel filter, here is an image if anyone can tell me whether the canister is oil injection or a water/fuel filter
