Yes it would, but the crossbrace becomes the "top" of that box. The one in the picture has the foam filled boxes also.... There will be a piece of 1/4" plywood on the face between the crossbrace and the deck. I'll drill a hole in the crossbrace to pour the foam into.

I think you're getting it now....keep posting plenty of answers here.

Re: '93 astro stringer and transom rebuild

What if I was to cut down the transom on each side to allow the shelves to sit on top of the existing transom and build the box like shown, attached to the transom. Seems like it would make it alot stronger if I did it that way. I am gonna try and take the transom back out 'cause he didnt coat with resin before installation or do you think it would be ok to just resin it the way it is. With the way it is in there right now, it is solid as a rock. I 6'6" 260 and tried everything I could to get it to move and it doesnt budge. Thanks for the help

As long as your grind out is down to raw glass..then yes. Prep/coat your wood well..then glass it.

Remember what I said in my previous post though..if the Initial bond is NOT correct.. you can pile up 2"s of glass on top of your tabbings and it will still fail.

The First one is the most critical of all of them ..

I think your fine the way you are. If your satisfied with the prep before you kick off your resin. :)

As far as the boxes...sorry cant help on that one..

Thanks, I think I will leave the transom in cut it on the sides to install shelves and give it a good resin coat before fiberglassing

As long as you're comfortable with it, then keep moving ahead.

Just make sure after your resin coating that you Tab in your transom on both sides where ever you can before you put in the Shelves ..

Like Cad said though..better make sure this is the approach you want to take before moving on.

Re: '93 astro stringer and transom rebuild

Sorry again for the slow repsonse.

Here a few pictures for ya. The first two are of just the new wood ready to go in, this is the same way your boat is set up. The third picture is a guide for you to build a cradle for the boat to set it, to help maitain it's shape during the rebuilding process. Boat hulls in the shape yours is in right now can easily warp and then when you glass back in the componets it will of course stay warped...and you don't wan that to happen.

I have a 93 Astro 20FSX that needs a new transom. Purchased it new and I bet it does not have 500 hours on the water. Anyway, not sure I want to take on a project such as this. So I am wondering what is the going rate to replace one? Other than the transom, (most important part).. The boat is in excellent shape, considering it is ~20 yrs old. Motor runs like a top, so I would like to fix it. I had a guy put a aluminum plate on the transom two years ago because he told me the transom was not that bad, but needed some strength. He also patched the gelcoat on the very bottom of the transom where it flexed and cracked. That patch did not work. I used the boat about 4 times since then, I used the boat last weekend and the bottom of the transom has now cracked worse.... I live about two and a half hrs from you, would you be interested in a project?
