Hey guys just have some questions about my bilge hole in my boat. I was backing around a light pole coming back from crabbing and rubbed up against my rubber bumper on my boat... Checking out the damage I noticed my bilge hole, seems like something is missing? Not sure if it was always like this or if I could have scraped the pole but it doesn't look like it. You can see in the pic that the hose is in the inside just kindle dangling there so it would just pump water back inside. Water will obviously get in the hole?

Any ideas and is it safe to boat like this? I haven't had a problem with water before I can't recall if it was always like this or if it just happened after my last boating session. How would I fix it and how do I get to it?

I would certainly fix it as soon as possible. If you get a call for the bilge pump to run, you want the water to go outside the boat, not back into the bilges, for sure.

Easy fix, just a PITA to get to on some boats. IBoats (and almost every marine store known to mankind (Walmart too)) will carry that part on the shelf. Take old one off, take it to store and match it up with the ones they have. There are different size thru hull fittings, so be sure the get the right one. Throw a little sealer around the new one's flange when you put it in and you'll be good to go.

Replacement through hull fittings are available right here on IBoats. No it is not safe to operate like this. Well -- it is as long as the bilge pump does't need to run. This is a safety issue. Fix it. Cost is probably less than $10.

Being below the rub rail it is possible although unlikely that in a hard turn with a loaded boat it could go below the water line.

Re: 93 Bilge hole

thanks for the responses guys, I def need to get it taken care of. I went crabbing today and the went below the water line in the waves and water was getting in. Where does the water go, I lifted the engine cover and there was only a lil bit... but when I put the boat in the trailer I ran the pump and it pumped water for a pretty long while. hopefully I wasn't close to sinking haha.

Got some good crab though

Is there an easy way to get to the line inside the boat?

You will probably have to remove a seat and/or some side padding and stand on your head to access the plumbing connections. The hose is probably held in place with a hose clamp. This should not be a big job, easy enough for a DIY. As mentioned above take the old one off and take it with you to the store for correct sizing. While you are in there check your connection to the bilge pump and all your hoses to the engine. Most boats this size are set up to have all the water run into the bilge from any source such as cooling water from the engine, etc.

It does bother me a little when a boat owner asks "Is a hole in the side of my boat safe!"
