Hey guys,

this is my first post on here. I'm glad that i came across this forum.

I have a '93 Johnson 140 and i am having an occasional problem of the pinion (bendix Gear) on my starter not engaging the flywheel.

For the most part the boat starts just fine but sometimes (usually when hot) the starter turns but the gear won't push in.

so far every time it has happened i have banged the side of the starter with a peice of 2x4 and she fires right up.

i am assuming that there is a solenoid in there that is starting to go but i haven't actually tried to disassemble the thing yet.

does anyone else have any insight on a starter from this vintage?

thanks,
spencer

add a little oil on the bendix shaft, be liberal but dont overdue it either. try that and let us know!

The solenoid is located next to the starter it is separate unit. It is easily replaceable as is the starter itself.

i know that the solenoid is beside the starter, but there still has to be a solenoid within the starter that physically pushes the bendix gear out.

i will try to oil it up but it will probably be a couple of weeks before i drop the boat in the water again.

thanks guys

The bendix gear engages the flywheel do to rotation of the starter mtr at the correct rpm. There is not a solenoid inside the starter itself. This is not an automotive type starter. Bad battery connections on both the battery and the mtr can cause this. Or else a bad starter mtr.

There is no solinoid inside the starter itself; the starter works by centrifiugal force on the bendix, that's why the oil on the shaft is needed so the gear can slide up to the flywheel. Same thing as an automobile starter.
