Greatly appreciate any help you guys can give. Im not new to wrenching but new to boats, picked up a 1993 16ft Tracker with a 93 Johnson 25 on it. Ran it up on a sandbar so figured it pull lower unit and flush everything out, replace impeller , thermostat, etc.

Im still waiting on parts but I pulled lower and ive got it in my shop. Pulled water pump cover and didnt find any real damage, not alot of sand etc but I pulled up on driveshaft and it came right out.

Problem is, when I try to reinstall it, I get the splines lined up and it goes down fine, it bottoms out then springs right back up. I feel like an idiot but surely the impeller/water pump doesnt hold it in place right? What am i missing?

** nevermind, drained the oil out and it drops right in lol. im an idiot..

Been there too. Study in hydraulic pressure, I guess -- also a reason not to add grease to the top of the driveshaft, rather than just the splines. Thanks for the note.
