The motor: 93 Johnson 70HP J70TLETS running premix 50:1 BRP XD50 oil with ethanol free 93 octane gas and the occasional bottle of seafoam. Motor has pretty low hours on it and has never seen a day of saltwater use.
The problem: Every now and then my motor kicks in to SLOW. When it does I shut it off, start it right back up and off on my merry way I go. Temperature is within range (160 cruising, 180ish putting around). Water pressure is good (about 8psi putting and in the mid to high 20's when cruising). Water jackets are nice and clean, Temperature switch is good, I've checked it several times in a calibrated temperature bath it always opens and closes at the same temperature +/- a degree, gauge and sender are also relatively accurate. The motor has been overheated once, to the point that the alarm sounded (190 degrees). As soon as I heard the alarm I shut it off threw the trolling motor in the water and eased back to the dock.
What I've done: New water pump and thermostat took care of the cooling. I also flushed the motor every way imaginable. Cleaned every single electrical connection.
What I'm thinking: I've considered changing the blocking diode but I've never heard of a diode that sometimes stops doing what it does. It either does all the time or don't all the time. I'm also considering putting a new powerpack on it, maybe it's getting warm and flaking out. Anyway that's what I got and am looking for any other ideas. Any help would be much appreciated.

Forget about the blocking diode. If it was open, you wouldn't get an overheat alarm. If is was shorted, a low-oil or a no-oil condition (VRO and oil tank connected) would trigger SLOW mode together with the alarm tone.

Why did the engine overheat once? Did you replace or just test the thermostat? 160/180F is a little high. Idle temp should be 140...150F. Typically the temp drops a little at higher rpm. If you find some debris when relacing the thermostat you can expect the same in the cyl head passages. Then it's time to pull the head and claen them.

If you are sure that the alarm buzzer and wiring is working all the time and the engine triggers SLOW mode without alarm tone you should suspect the power pack.

Re: 93 Johnson 70HP J70TLETS intermittent SLOW mode

Engine overheated because I sucked up a bunch of dirt and some small pebbles trying to beach the boat. The impeller looked ok but the impeller plate had some fairly deep grooves in it, but all tha including the thermostat is new now. My teleflex temperature gauge only shows Cold and Hot with a few hash marks inbetween. Comparing it to other teleflex gauges with numbers I figure I'm close to 180 or 200 trolling around and in the low 140's or low 160's at speed. Cylinder head passages looked great and i flushed the head. The horn works, I've checked that. I want to lean towards the power pack but maybe I need to recheck my cooling situation again. Thanks for the input.
