1993 johnson 88 special, new water pump, new thermostats, pee hole hose and nipple are clean. starting up after hibernating from winter. syntethic oil in gas. problem is, when engine is warmed up; overheat alarm goes off and water coming out of pee hole comes and goes. water is very hot to the touch. what should i do next?

suggestions i got were : remove lower unit and reinstall to make sure connections are tight; since water is being diverted somewhere when thermostat opens up and pressure comes up. and remove thermostats and reinstall.

Sounds like the water's not making it up from the pump, if you have a weak telltale. The pump's new? Maybe the tubes didn't seat in the pump body well.

There are two hoses running from your heads to the body of the thermostat (looking at the powerhead from the back). Take those off, while the motor is running. If you have a good water flow out of them, and the motor cools off, your thermostats are stuck. Otherwise, does sound like your pump, or the tubes coming up from your pump.

Are you running it in the water or on muffs?

Had the same problem with 115 SPL. Overheated on muffs, everything OK in barrel and in lake. If you're running on muffs, try turning the garden hose pressure down. I think that too much hose pressure causes motor to pump water internally like it wouldn't otherwise. Good luck!
