Model J3RETB 1993 Johnson 3 hp in wonderful condition.

Well I was moving right along in trying to set the idle just right. I had my outboard in a tank and was having some success. After having warmed up the engine I put her in gear and started the process. I had previously installed a new impeller and water was coming out of the pee hole with some force and considerably less from the three little holes next to the pee hole. (Right under the cowl on the engine) Exhaust is under water below the prop. This whole process used a lot of gas. I was putting in probably a pint to a quart at a time and it seemed that after 10 or so minutes I was out of fuel. I just would put another quart in and continued on all the while generating great amounts of smoke/exhaust. At one time I forgot to move the shift back to neutral and started up the engine. No problem as I was in an idle position (very slow speed). Well all of a sudden no more water from the pee hole. The water was replaced with a great deal of smoke. No water and lots of smoke. I shut her down and this is what I have:

a prop that spins without any resistance (impeller problem?)
oil coming down from under the cowl (black)

I hope I have not caused serious damage.

Please give me some direction.

sounds like carb is running over, or allowing too much fuel thru. check your compression, could have blown head or exhaust gasket. i always set with the cowl off, then fine tune with it on.

Tash,

Thanks!

Why no resistance on the prop?
How do I determine the blown Head Gasket?

if lower is in neutral, the prop only turns the prop shaft, if you put it in gear, and it stll turns freely, and does not turn the flywheel, you may have a broken drive shaft. besure to turn prop both ways. you have a 2 cylinder motor, if gasket is blown one cylinder will most likely register different of the compression guage.
