Re: 93 Yamm 115 - new impeller and thermostats now hot over 4000rpm

Alright, looks like my kids deleted all my posts:mad:

To summarize, I had the same overheating issues that the OP had. Changed the WP, thermostats, poppit etc. Still overheated.

All is well now after having the water jackets cleaned...the mechanic showed me some pics of the scale...it was nasty!

Thought I'd update in case anyone else searches this thread.:D

Hi all. Rodbolt your suspicion that I had more than the poppet going on was right (...add that to all the other times you have nailed things on here for the grateful masses matey :))

At 5500rpm and 39 miles per hour she overheats...I dont run her there normally, but wanted to see whether it was going to be a problem given the overheat problems pre-poppet cleaning...it now runs fine even at about 5000rpm. So I pulled the head covers off so I can see the water galleys in the covers and around the cylinder heads near the plugs. It has build up of salt and waxy stuff - about a 1/10 of an inch (a couple of mm) in many places - given how narrow the galleys are I reckon that might be my problem. Any thoughts on that?

In order to clean, do I just use a stiff narrow brush and scrub them out. I have Salt-X - can I use that with some water to desolve the build up. Should I spray salt-X into the galleys past the outside cylinder walls to get some into that part of the engine to try to disolve the wax...and will it hurt to stick a garden hose in there to assist that process...any thoughts on this would be gratefully received.

I was then going to get some new gaskets and stick her all back together. Whats the best goo to use for the bolts that hold the covers on - ie anti-sieze goo?

Cheers and thanks

..and are the exhausts a problem - should the covers come off the exhausts for a clean up...the bloody gaskets for the head covers were $52 EACH...so unless the exhausts are normally a drama I would rather leave them alone if possible.

Cheers

Done it with the help of a nylon brush in the drill...and heaps of elbow work. All nice and clean, just a very small amount of pitting in parts...so hopefully another 5-10 years of good running.

Cheers

PS. Dont know why Yammy used a sticky gasket, because the salt builds up on it...
