I have this motor. I also have a mate who is a merc dealer who thinks it will throw a pin because it has done about 500 hours. He says Yammy's are famous for doing so, especially pushing heavy loads. I have a glass 21 foot cruiser - constant deep v. On the water with 4 adults and a tribe of kids it weighs about 2000kgs (4200 odd pounds) - ie 2 tonns. I am concerned because I have heard that elsewhere but thought that it was from earlier engines. The engine does not make any unusal noises. Any comments (apart from the obvious - ie that he would like to sell me a Merc 200).

Also he reckons that my motor probably has fixed (cast?) jets and that when they get wear like some of the old OMC motors I might not be able to replace them and they can run lean and that there would be nothing that I could do, short of drilling them out? make sense?

Cheers

PS. My most recent motor was a 3cyl 60hp Merc 2000 model 2 stroke and I can say that I am generally more impresed by the Yammy, but he has me a little converned about catastrophic failure!

500 hours is not a lot of hours for that engine. the jet thing is baloney. prop your boat to achieve recommended wot with a normal load and you should never have a problem.
i ran a lot of these engines with heavy loads working on a pearl farm in broome west aus. with drivers that only knew 2 speeds. i think the wot rpm for your engine is 6000rpm. if you can achieve this with a full tank of gas and 2 adults and gear thats all you can do. good luck.
