Last post bore no fruit so this is where I'm at.

All tests of ignition hardware show good using OMC manual tests and specs.

Timing light on #1 and #3 show double fire, timing light on #2 shows firing on #4 and light on #4 shows firing on #4. This is a crossflow V4 with a new CDI4 power pack. There must be a reason for this. Thanks

Quick question! I've forgoten but help me remember. Does this motor have QuickStart?? I'm having brain-drain and remember that most if not all of the 90 degree crossflow engines didn't but if you have a two wire temp sender on either the port or starboard temp/cylinder heads, then you do have QuickStart. Now, if you do, and the engine is still in "warm-up" mode, QuickStart will have the timing all cattywhampus and inconsistant with a timing kight!! To eliminate it, hook a jumper wire to the white with black stripe wire coming out of the temp sender and into the wiring harness. That will turn off QuickStart and allow proper checking of the timing! So, you need to check this! Perhaps the motor IS too cold and QuickStart is always on as it never warms up??? BUT, if the flywheel key is not shear'd, (check the #1 piston is at TDC, with a screwdriver and should match up with the pointer), it's either the timer base (not likely) or the pack (more likely).

Thanks P.V. but the engine does not have quick start. Is it possible that the new power pack is scrambled? The tests with a Stevens adapter show that it has 170+ volts and the manual wants 150+. I agree that what I've described would need a central cause since the #4 is the only one acting right. Are there any other tests?

Multispark is caused by failed switch's in the powerpack.

Instead of the trigger or sensor coils sending the signal to open and close them...they remain open and just let the current though.

TMD

Sigh. That would account for the good test on output. I've sent an e-mail to Rapair. Many thanks Doc. I'm sure everyone will agree that having everything test good and run like crap is a bit frustrating.
