Hello,
I just purchased a used 1994 25hp merc and had it checked out, the mechanincs saying it was fine. I got it home hooked up water supply and started it up and it is smoking pretty bad. Is this normal? I know it is the correct mixture, but maybe its just old gas? How much are they supposed to smoke if any?

Brian, It could have residual oil from winterizing. You really need to run it a bit to clean it out. It should leave a puff of blue smoke when you hit the throttle, and have a faint trail of smoke at cruising speed.

I have a 97 mercury tracker motor. I seen where you said you know the fuel oit mixture is right, but you didnt mention what that was. My manual says 25:1 for the break in period (the first tank of fuel) and after that i should go with 50:1.

Assuming it's broken in by now :) 50:1 is correct.

The mixture I am using is 50:1. I will try some new gas. Thanks
