Boat is still pretty new to the owner.
Owner replaced the ring gear, promptly split new starter nose casing, reinstalled old starter w/new drive, and ate the teeth off the new drive.
Claims he counted ring teeth, the same # as old, and laid the new gear over the old to make sure both perfectly matched.
I took the starter off to look, no bevel on the ring gear teeth. Told him to find the right ring gear.
Boat is back to winterize, starter just grinds, he just put another drive gear on and 'shimmed' the starter.
Who knows for sure if the ring gear is supposed to have a bevel on the leading edge same as the starter drive teeth do?
