Did you do a leak down test yet?

That's going to tell you quickly where the direction of the air force is primarily going (head gasket, lower end, head/valves)

Don't take the engine head off or more until you identify where the relevant leakage is coming from first using a leak down test.

Blown head gasket, might be an easy fix with a valve job and flatness check on original motor. The 1500 motor would be a good swap

Those engines are pretty easy to take apart and simple to repair, I had to use an impact gun to get the cyl head bolts out because of raw water cooling in the salt water. I would do a leak down test first. You can still get reman heads for the pre vortec heads, or get yours redone if they just need to be magnafluxed checked for flatness & a valve job.
