OK I admit, I screwed this up some. Boat needed a new transom, I was a little slow, boat has not been in the water for 2 years.

Hooked her up yesterday, but I admit I am no expert.

Boat starts easy, no problem there. But revving really high, 7000 rpm.

What would be the likely cause? Could it be the carb? dirty?

Could I have hooked the throttle up wrong?

What should I look for first?

More info is needed.

When is it revving to 7000, is it in gear when under way, instantly when you start it, or when?

The tach may not be on the right setting, the reading will be off if the switch on the back is set on the wrong number.

Your motor should have a rev limiter, I have no idea what it would be set at, but it shouldn't be able to reach 7000 RPM's.

As soon as it starts, it is idling at 7000. Does not start lower and rev up to 7000, instantly at 7000. All I have done so far is start it in the driveway with muffs on it.

Good point about the tach, I have often wonered if the tach is accurate. But it is idling at super high revs.

I am pretty sure you would know if your motor is really going 7,000RPM on a flusher in the driveway, trust me on that one! but just to be sure, have a look at the carby linkage setup (without the motor running)and no cable connected, is the linkage free to move by hand, and is it returning back to the stop? check that and get back to us.

"As soon as it starts, it is idling at 7000."

It would be screaming its guts out at those RPM's and most likely self destruct fairly quickly. The setting on the tach is off, or there?s a different problem with it.

Look at the throttle linkage and see if the butterflies in the carb are shutting completely with the throttle lever in the idle position. If they aren't then you need to adjust it so they will.

It was a linkage problem, fixed thanks guys. Now I have a starter issue though so I guess I start a new thread

OK

I fixed the starter and it is working great. I thought the linkage problem was going to solve the high idle speed and it did reduce the idle speed a lot, but it is still idling too high.

After not being run for two years, I am thinking the carb needs a cleaning and it is a waste of time touching the idle adjustment until that is done.
