94 johnson 150hp...reverse won't kick in

I have a 94 johnson 150 hp fast strike. my reverse won't kick in, throttle seems to be spinning the prop. I tried adjusting the cable but still having problem. Forward works fine.

Also there is a small chipping sound coming from the shift box that seems to come on when accelerating and slowing down after the engine warms up. checked my oil level, seems fine.

There is also a vibrating loud sound from the back (engine) when slowing down.... (just a new boat owner)

Get a factory manual and install the cables by the book, its simple enough but needs to be done right.
Disconnect the cables and shift manually, I think you'll find it shifts ok.

get genuine factory service manual, not clymer or other aftermkt books.
I have a 1994 J150, got the manual on ebay for $40, it saved me a couple of grand so far.

darn, this guy is selling genuine manuals for $15 each, I paid $40 !

has the lower unit been off recently, if so some one may have turn the shift rod, and it is out of adjustment.

is the shift rod about two feet tall cube shape?.
