94' johnson 9.9 only stays running if turn choke on/off

just picked up a 94' johnson 9.9 and came home and started it, it fires right up easily but to keep it running i need to turn choke on/off.looks like the carb was replaced in 97(the sticker on carb has a date from 11-25-97)-chokes on, it runs good for about 15 seconds starts to die down then push choke off it does the same for about 15 seconds then starts to die so i pull it back out etc, if i try to rev it, it will die down. ?thinking carb may be dirty? any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Start with a good carb cleaning.
Off topic... Since the motor is new to you, you should replace the water pump impellor.

cleaned it out, runs with out choke now. one of the jets is in pretty bad shape still. a little corrosion. going to see if it cleans itself out a little. if not, time for a rebuild kit

started it back up today and its back to its antics blah, time for a rebuild kit
