it runs great for a few times out...then the next time - nothing. Last time a techy inspected the stator but it didn't 'smell' burned. put it back together and with new plugs it started up and has run well until today. (maybe 10 hours?) It seems like I flooded it and then when i took the plugs all out they were wet. I could look in one of the plug holes and see the piston top is covered with carbon. I Read the threads on decarbing but how can you do that without the engine running? I'm in africa and have no choice on my fuels and oils. I Get what's available. There's no such thing as 'unleaded' fuel here - could that be the problem? thanks for any advice!

First thing to do is make sure you have spark when it won't start. A decarb will do no good until you get your problem figured out.

And by the way, you will get better replys if you post this in the "Mercury & Mariner Outboard Troubles/Repair" section on the main page...
