my brother has this motor and he states that it is a force made by merc,anyways---he is telling me that he has a water leak where the lower end bolts to the engine housing(6 bolts) is there a gasket at that location(he says there is one that has pieces missing) he said that all of a sudden it started leaking and started running very bad,is this a severe problem or can he drop the lower end and replace the gasket, what else should he be looking for? he has mechanical ability so he could do it. any and all help would be appreciated. thanks in advance

There are two gaskets where the powerhead fastens to the midsection of the motor. Between the powerhead and the midsection is what is referred to as a shift plate. There is a gasket between the powerhead and the shift plate and another gasket between the shift plate and the midsection housing. Only way to replace these is to pull the powerhead off the top of the motor. Not a really difficult job, just document how and where everything hooks up so when it comes time to reassemble you have a reference to work from. You should get a manual before any work of this degree. As for the watew leaking, I'm not sure what affect that would have on the operation of the motor.
