Just had stator replaced, now I can't get it to run over 10mph. Dealer says it needs a wear ring. It ran fine before stator failure. I seems to bogg at full throtle. I've changed plugs 4 times, using recommended Quicksliver TCW3 oil and 87 octane gas. It ran out of gas or close to it when this whole mess started. I think it seems as if the dealer doesn't have it timed right. Lots of smoke also which comes and goes and plugs are wet when checked. This is my 1st boat and am wondering why I did this! ha

Hi, Stingray.

Welcome to iboats. :)

You don't have a Mercruiser I/O. You have a Mercury Outboard Trouble.

Moving this to the correct Forum.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB. Like I said, it's our first boat! I'm plannning on getting a maint manual and learning this engine myself. Sort of feel I'm geting bad info from dealer.

Your problem isn't serious. When it was starving for gas, it was still getting a full dose of oil. Right now the carbs are full of syrup. If you can get it to run, it'll eventually lean-out to a proper ratio, but you might foul plugs. If you have the carbs drained, that's all it should take. Happy boating!

Would you believe that Mercury considered that a stern drive? Even though it essentially has an outboard powerhead. Go figure! But JB is wise indeed. You'd get more responses in the Merc/Mariner outboard section. Maybe even in the Chrysler/Force section since it's basically one of those powerheads. The MerCruiser guys really cringed when they learned they'd be doing the Tech Assistance calls. I think they moved it to the outboard section now. Probably because of the V-6 powerheads which are all Mercury.

Re: 94 Sea Rayder Mercury 90 run bad?

I have the same boat and i know what you mean when you say it only goes 10 mph, cause i replaced the impellar, wear ring, carbs, and my boat only goes 10mph as well i am really pist cause that adds up to 2,000 dollars and it still dont go .then it is very diffficult to find the parts. so i just suggest we should both get newer boats and not that brand . If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.:(

This may sound dumb, but when my exhaust bellows blew out it would fill the engine compartment up with exhaust and would run rich and slow also smoke a lot. I had to go 15 miles with the engine compartment up, holding it with my left hand while driving with my right.

I have a 94 Sea Rayder Mercury 90 i get it for aprox $250 but it has no engine. Im planing to install a 40hp toa 75hp outboard because I have been tolld that the original engin causes a lot of truble. what do you think?
