Good afternoon,
Working on a 94 regal with twin 4.3 Volvo Penta old style Duo props. I think they are C drives and not the 290’s. The bellows were shot and both drives had water in them when pulled. The yokes look terrible, (however, the universals feel very good). Pressure tested the drives and both are leaking at the yoke seal. Pulled the first apart and it also will need a new seal collar, (I think this is called the crush sleeve) as it is well grooved and probably won’t clean up and seal well.
My question is, are Volvo Penta yokes interchangeable between 270, 280, 290, C drives.. etc. I have a 270 laying around and they look the same from the outside. I have not pulled the 270 yoke yet to see what the inside Iooked like and if interchangeable. If they are not interchangeable, how do you tell the difference between them.
Thank you very much for your help with this.
attaching pics as well to help identify the drives.

In doing some more research, I found that there are yokes with female 10 spline, and those with 26 on the female side. The ones from the 94 dp drive that I have are the fine spline 26. The 270 drive that i have also has the fine spline. thank you again for any help in clarifying what the differences are.

There are some shims inside the seal sleeve. If you leave them out you will burn up the input bearings. They set the preload between the 2 bearings.

There is a good chance the engine has to come out to replace the bearings in the adapter housing.
Just hope that the drive shaft is not rusted into the flex plate on the flywheel.

about 1988-89 they went from shims to crush sleeves for the input pre-load

you must follow the manual

Good morning again.
In looking at different yokes on ebay/ other sights, some have universal joints with clips on the inside of the cups vs mine that has them on the outside. Does that make a difference? they appear the same length and diameter as what I have. Also, some have a more rounded area on the outside of the female spline shaft where the one I have has a mores obvious two different diameter levels on it as it goes into the back of the bell housing with the seal area. This has made trying to find the correct one seem to be very difficult. The volvo penta web sights that have found don't give a part number for the yoke assembly, all just say "no longer available"
does anyone know of a sight that may give actual part numbers, or if one with internal clips on the universals would actually work for this drive.
I thank you all again for any advice on this project.
