I Have A 95 40 Hp Force. The Trim Goes Up And Down Fine. The Problem Is That When You Go Up I Can Stop The Engine By Putting Very Little Pressure On The Lower Unit. When Going Down It Works Find. There Is No Leak Down If It Sits Up. I Was Thinking It Was In The Check Valves. I Took Apart The Two Assemblys And Foud That One Of The Seals On The Popit Valves Was Installed Backwards. I Corrected That And It Did Not Change. It Seems Like It Has Blow By In The Directional Valve. Am I Close Or Not.

Does your pump look like this and attach to a single ram via two oil tubes?

If so then my guess is that you need a complete system overhaul. My guess is that the bleed down is probably caused by a piece of debris lodged inside a pump passageway. The debris probably came off your trim piston ring. In order to permanently fix the problem both the ram and the pump need to be repaired at same time.

It could be some other stuff, but this is most likely suspect. Mercury used cheap ATF and the additives cause trim system failure. Out of warranty of course ... but still premature failure.

Negative. The System Used On The 95 40 Horse Is The Self Contained Unit With The Cylinder Attatched To The Valve Housing. Both The Pump And The Cylinder Sit Under The Motor. I Have Seen The More Common 2 Piece Systems Used On Most Force Motors.


I Guess I Was Thinking That Since It Goes Up Find And Does Not Bleed Down That It Was In The Vavles Not The Pump Or Cylinder. I Cannont Force The Motor Down Unless The Pump Is Trying To Run The Motor Up. If Running In The Water The Motor Will Not Move. But If I Try To Trim The Motor Up The Motor Has Enough Force To Push The Motor Down To The Transom. I Will Check Those Out If No Other Thoughts. THANK YOU.
