I just bought a 95' Four Winns Horizon 240 with the 454cid 7.4 GL cobra engine and King Cobra sterndrive.

I think this is the "INTERIUM" King Cobra. From what i was told by LouC on the FW site. Said that I should look for the raw water pump run as an accessory and not like a normal automotive pump. I've got the automotive Water Pump so i rekon i got the rare one.

Haven't had it in the water yet... Cleaning it up and trying to source a windshield. But, the engine is super tight. I'm a engine guy and it runs wonderfully. the Sterndrive doesn't make any noise in forward or reverse. I know NOTHING about Sterdrives.

This is my first boat...... :)

Is it OK to run the boat in gear at low rpm on the trailer? If I can't get the sterndrive trimmed all the way down is that ok? I lack just a little bit until its fully stroked down. the "fin" hits the dirt.

ALSO... "Damn Newbies" I'm going to change the sterndrive fluid. What do y'all recommend weight wise. Anyone know the filter numbers they use off hand? I'd like to swap everything over to synthetic oil's. I'm going to go with 10W-40 Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. Should I go with some Royal Purple 75W-90???

Grease Points.... Where are the places that i need to grease before getting it wet. I see a grease zerk on the PORT side of the sterndrive, do y'all know what that is for?

Do all marine engine LOPE at idle?

Thanks for your time!

Howdy,

Said that I should look for the raw water pump run as an accessory and not like a normal automotive pump.
Yeah, I thought a 95 would be an SX but it appears you have the drive mounted raw water pump

Yes & yes.

ENSURE that you have the water hose connected with a flush adapter and the water is on BEFORE you start the engine and until you shut it down. If you ran it dry for any length of time, plan on replacing the raw water pump before you take it out.

Use Mercury HP drive lubricant (it's synthetic) Or use Volvo synthetic drive oil.

If you're going to change your drive oil. Get your hands on the OEM correct year service manual and follow the instructions carefully. Fill it wrong and you'll be buying yourself a new drive (if you can buy one.....you do know that OMC is out of business)

Do a search for motor oil here. Just about every type and wt of oil has been tried successfully. Marine engines just don't fail for type of oil....they do fail if you don't put oil in them!!;)

Grease Points..
Service manual!

"Any grease is better than no grease at all...............":p

Do all marine engine LOPE at idle?
Well, mine doesn't. They usually do not have a cam that would cause that. The cams are usually more like an RV/truck type cam. Those are not usually "lopey".

congrats on your "new" boat!

Get an OEM service manual!

Cheers,

Rick

When I purchased my new to me '95 7.4L in dec 09, I thought it had a loping cam in it. it turned out 1 cylinder was low on comp. After i rebuilt due to my lack of winterization skills, I have no lope using the OEM cam.

The 7.4L ran good enough for me to purchase it as it came out of the water fine with a big heavy boat and revved to 4300 where it seemed to run out of cam. New motor only revs to 4300, but gets out of the water better than before.

The main question is where is your raw water pump? Is it on the back of the drive under the cover or driven by a belt at the lower starboard side of your engine.

What is your model number?

Right if it's on the rear of the upper gear housing then it's the pure OMC Cone Clutch...these were still used on the big blocks in this time frame evidently even though the regular V6s and V8s were getting the joint venture Cobra/Cobra SX

Drive Assembly Mod # 3868211
Transom Assem Mod # 2868213
Engine Mod # 744DPHUB

It feel like there is a small 1.5 or 2" hose that runs into the top of the OD. Would this be the raw water line?

I need to buy that book.....

I think i have the super rare setup. I'm not worried about it. even though it hasn't been in the water yet. It sounds good, and is supposed to be a great unit up until it fails then it's only a pain because of the parts availability.

Being that this is a 454 if and when i need to think about upgrading the sterndrive, will it be possible to swap out to a Bravo 3 without having to mortgage the house or completely repower the boat?

it sure is a big unit...

Thanks yall.

Even though i don't have the accessory drive driven water pump?

does the joint venture mean that its a volvo engine and omc sterndrive package.

Mine is also carburetor.

***EDIT*** I found the Holley carbed model. It's been messing with me because the 95 four winns brochure only has the FI model.

*** Also now that its a SX i don't have anything to worry about for now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would it also be easy to upgrade to a duo unit?

If that is your model number, then you should have the belt driven pump. Maybe the 7.4L is a strange one.

Take the cover off the back of the drive and snap a picture. That will tell all.

No need to take a picture. The numbers tell the story.
The drive is an SX.
You do have an engine drive raw water pump.

This is strange,

Doug Russell shows the 1995 7.4 as being the "interim" model which is a drive mounted raw-water pump.

Of course they're never wrong right?

if it is an SX you'd be far better off putting a Volvo DPS/etc type drive on it and it would be an easy mod!

I donno..... Boats.net also indicates that model as having a drive mounted raw pump.....

No SX ever had a drive mounted pump did it?

I just ran into the same thing on the BRP site. But the Volvo site shows the 3868211 number as the SX.
The problem seems to be within BRP's system. Since even the service manuals show the HU as being an SX
I will verify this at work tomorrow as I think we actually have the OEM OMC manuals for that model.

I thought they were all SX's by 95.... maybe it all happened by 95.5......

1996 shows an engine mounted pump

Back cover. On the drive.

It sure doesn't look eaxctly like an SX to me. Cover looks different.

That does not look like an SX.

If you remove that cover on the back of the drive, you'll find a raw water pump underneith. You SHOULD do it too and inspect/replace the impeller..... unless the previous owner can prove it was replaced recently.

That is NOT an SX. It is the old style King Cobra cone clutch.

I guess I am going to be looking at those old manuals for a while and see what all OMC stuck everyone with between 94 and 98 during the joint venture.

I've been on this forum for quite a while, and never heard of any OMC drives after 93... Live and learn I guess.

i thought it was a cone king. On another forum they said the hump on the top denotes the cone king....

O well, Not worried now. But for later what will i need to do to swap out to a duo or bravo 3?
