How difficult would it be for an 'Average" person to change out the waterpump on a 95 70hp Johnson? I've never attempted to do anything such as this and wanted some info before I jumped into it. Going to work...check back later..Thanks in advance.

Re: 95 70hp Johnson waterpump

I would say not very difficult. You need:

1. Manual. So you know where the bolts are and how to install the pump and seals.

2. Appropriate socket and box end wrenches to remove lower unit and water pump.

3. Water pump kit

I would think this is on a par with changing your own oil and oil filter on your car. Basically they (outboards) are all similar, you are removing the lower unit from beneath the motor and unbolting the water pump from the top of the lower unit and replacing it or the rubber impeller inside of it. Then you just bolt it back up. The manual is necessary because each model has a different number of bolts and the gear shift rods are all connected differently. I say go for it. My attitude is if you are going to go boating you should be able to tackle this degree of repair.

P.S. The only real trouble people get into with this is when bolts won't come out and/or get stripped. But that can be dealt with also.

Stratosfied,
I've got a '97 Evinrude 115 V4 I'm going to do my first water pump on, your Johnson may not be too different. Bought it a year ago and put in the water the other day and the overheat alarm sounded idling over to the ramp dock... The trick my dealer told me was getting the shift rod connected back, he said it was really tight getting to it up in the powerhead. Anyway, we can compare notes if you'd like. The pump kits are really cheap, and the dealer said he'd want about $220 to do it. 'No brainer' that we do it ourselves...

I've gotten an OMC manual from my dealer. What other manuals do any of you recommend? What about any other boards?
