Please help. My 1995 48 has manual tilt and has become over a period of time, harder and harder to move. A few years ago , it got stuck in the up position and I changed out the broken plastic actuator and associated cabling. There is no way I can get to it now that it is down but it feels like it's still connected. I cannot free the motor angle pin because it is apparantly "frozen" in it's original position due to corrosion. Could anyone give me any info on what could have caused this thing to "Lock UP" and what I can do to fix it? I am afraid I will have to pull the motor off the transom, and if there is any way I can avoid this I would be a very happy boater.

Reefkeepa, there is still a way to release the cylinder I think. Let me go check it out and I will get back to the forum in a few minutes.

First off, what exactly do you mean by "motor angle pin"?

In answer to you question about why they freeze up, I can answer why mine froze up slowly but surely. The cable you speak of is routed around and underneath the engine drivetrain housing (I know there is a better term for it but I am brain dead at the moment on what it is) Its just long enough to get caught and pinched if not routed carefully. Mine got pinched and saltwater intruded there and over a few months killed the cable. Thats one scenario. There are others I'm sure. I always spray the ends of the cable down with Corrosion Blocker or something similar after each trip to salt water.

Getting back to your situation, with the engine fully down, you can still access the black plastic nut that fastens the cable into the housing on the lower end of said cable. Of course you can't access the clamshell fixture up top right now, but thats ok. The business end of this is the lower unit I just described.

1. Loosen the nut and push up out of the way.

2. With a thin flat bladed screwdriver or something similar, carefully pry up on the base of the fixture and you will see that it seems to be spring loaded. If you pry it up enough the engine should be able to be "lifted" by a helper while you hold the base tilted over. Same as when the cable is activated when you turn the handle up top. If this doesn't work.... then the cable assembly is probably ok and something else is frozen. Not good. Maybe the hydraulic cylinder is frozen. Not good at all. I think they are not repairable. In this case you will have to remove the engine to have the access you need. It weighs about 187 lbs, so its not too bad if you rig up a hoist.

Let me know what you find. If you need a picture or two, I can shoot one over to your email.

Thanks for the advice. I actually tried to get that nut loose but it is so large I can't get a tool in there in order to turn it. I'll give it another try though before I build another A frame to lift it. I just rebuilt my transom 2 summers ago and lifted the motor up and out of the way for that. That motor angle pin is the stainless rod with the nut on either side that is supposed to be a means of selecting motor angle.

Hey Gil009,
I got the SOB up but I think I broke something.
The cable came out of the housing where it seems that a piston of some type is there. It seems like if you push down on the piston the hydraulics close and if you pull up on it they open. Long story short I may have broken that pin.

Yes it can be done for about 400.00 (part only). This price is for a used unit. Does your control have t/t wiring and a switch?

By the way, I'm going through the same #&$* with my 40 hp evinrude. Its bad enough that its manual. Unserviceable is inexcusable on behalf of OMC.

Reefkeepa, are you sure? The cable merely slips between a fork or something like that. Then when you pull up on it and tighten the cable it can't come out. Are you saying you broke the fixture that the cable hooks into? The piston you mention is just what you described. Down is closed, up is open to allow movement. Should be Stainless Steel. Can you attach a photo of the "broken piece"?

I decided to go with the PT 130. I would have to replace a lot of stuff to get it back to factory specs. Not worth it. I'll spend the $500 and have power tilt now. My old lady won't let me buy a new motor.

I envy you. Wish my lil motor had it, but the manual assist is working so well now that I couldn't justify it. But when it goes......
