out on the big bend (FL) flats monday wearing my favorite trout hole out. started back in to the marina as darkness was approaching, running at 17 - 20 MPH on my toon when the engine suddenly reved to high RPM's and propulsion stoped. No water from pee hole just steam, no forward no reverse. engine will start but no prop turn and no water circulating through the cooling system. any suggestions as to what to be expecting? my first thoughts are a broken shaft. the propeller will spin if you turn it by hand.

fluidshooter,
It sounds like you broke your drive shaft. The force 70 is a powerful motor that mercury stuck a 50hp gear box on that is not enough gear box for the hp. remove your gear box and take a look. good luck, bret

If you need further assistance please email me @ forcepower01@yahoo.com. thanks,Bret

how often do you hear of this occuring? to my knowledge the prop has not impacted any object, is it possibly due to just normal wear and tear or is the motor undersized for the boat 24' w/ plywood deck (kinda heavy but rides rough water smooth)
i have no gripes about my F O R C E 7 0 , she has given me many smiles and lots of memories, hopefully she will respect my pocketbook for the repair and be content with regularly scheduled maint. she recieves.
i do not have repowering in mind but should i spend the $$$$....?????

Yep..you either broke the driveshaft or spun the driveshaft splines at the top inside the crank. As regular maintenance you should pull the gearcase and regrease the splines to prevent rusting which will weaken the driveshaft.

TMD

We are not allowed to post such things in here, as Iboats has sponsors that we might cut out of some business.

Email is the way to go if you need to request such information.

TMD

My drive shaft sheared and a replacement was quoted at £180 pounds however i had also damaged the forward and reverse gears i got a 2nd hand gearbox for 270 with a damaged skeg(my skeg was ok)so we swapped all the interior over, mine sheared because i tried to skimp on buying a new shaft when i hit a rock we had heated the shaft to straighten it and thats where it sheared.
