Tonight my 25' crest pontoon left me stranded on the Ky river. The boat has been increasingly hard to start when cold. Tonight it wouldn't do it at all, which led to a dead battery. Once warm the engine runs great, but if allowed to cool off for 30-40 min then is almost impossible to start. I had 2 used and 1 new plugs on the boat and swapped them out. Upon removing the cowling, strong smell of fuel with some visible in carb throat. Plugs that came out were very wet with fuel and black. I had a friend ground the plug on the head to see if we had fire. He said the wire was arcing and fire exscaping before the plug also shocked him but i can't attest as i couldn't see. Even with the new (semi) plugs no luck. During cranking, sounded as though it was backfiring through the carb. I put a carb kit in it a couple months ago and seemed to be doing good, but the cold starting problem kept slowly getting worse. Engine seems to not like anything but idle or wot. Like you give throttle from idle and nothing, little more and it starts sputtering, little more and it really takes off. Since the install i've noticed a slighty higher than normal idle but nothing that is a problem, just a few hundred rpm to the ear. Iplan on replacing plugs and wires before i take it in. Any other suggestions. Thank you so much for your help

Is the first start of the day problematic also?

If not, put a new diaphragm in the fuel pump, decarb the engine, and make sure the fuel recirculation lines are working (not clogged).

Usually starts first time. Runs a couple min then dies. Then very hard to restart. Then as long as you don't let it set longer than 10 min it will restart on first or second try all day. Thanks Roscoe, I desperately need to get it fixed, my family is losing faith in her. Being stranded sucks! Second time in two outings( first unrelated).

Where are the fuel recirc lines located? Thanks again

Re: '95 force 70 stranded!!

From the symptoms described, I would bet on the fuel pump diaphragm, gets holes in it and floods out the lower cylinder. Do this first.

The fue recirc is all the little fuel drain hoses that come out of the side of the block. They collect excess fuel and bring it back to the carb for re-use. The fittings in the side of the block have one-way check valves in them.

But do the fuel pump first. The parts are under $20, and you can do it in 1/2 hour. If you order the part from a Mercury dealer, they should come with an instruction sheet.

Re: '95 force 70 stranded!!

Rebuilt the fuel pump tonight on my force. Think everything went very well. Primed the carb, started right away. As soon as it warmed up, the engine began missing and when it did I noticed blue smoke popping out of the powerhead on the right side accompanied by a big miss. I figured it had something to do with a botched pump rebuild, but on closer inspection, i saw that the smoke was coming from behind the coil/electronics on the right side. I removed those, restarted engine on the muffs, noticed it was coming from the side of the block from the plates that are over the sides of the cylinders. I noticed gasket material was blown out from behind the top (cylinder?) plate, i could only see a small section of gasket missing at the bottom of the middle cylinder, but when the misfire would occur fire/blue smoke would shoot out of that gap. This is with brand new plugs installed, as I purchased two new sets in preperation for the decarb treatment. Question is, is that a symptom of my problem, or the problem itself? I'm sure it has to be a major vacuum leak, but just wonder if it could stem from the boat not being used for the last 3 years. To your extreme credit Roscoe, the internals of the fuel pump seemed extremelly deteriorated. So at least i know that it was not money and time wasted. The boat was popping like this when it was failing to restart and i think i listed it as popping through the carb, but i know know that the popping was out of the side of the engine. Another question, could I repair those gaskets with a high heat and or copper RTV, or do I require the new gaskets? Thanks so much for your help. especially you Roscoe

Since you have blown gaskets and fuel diaphram, it has probably come from the back firing that the engine is doing. Back firing is one of the worst things you can have on a Force engine as it destroys fuel diaphrams, cover gaskets and sometimes bends reeds.

You need to at least pull the carbs and inspect the reeds to see if they have been damaged.

There is only 1 carb. I will pull it tomorrow and check the reeds
