'95 Johnson 110HP with repaired blown cylinder question

Good evening gents! I'm going to look at a boat Monday that has a 1995 Johnson 110HP VRO and engine on it. The seller claims to be a mechanic, and that he rebuild a cylinder due to it having a hole blown in the top of it. He claims excellent compression and great running order. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for? He's asking for $1500 for the engine... would you guys recommend trying it even though its been fixed or look for another engine? For about the same $$ I could get an early 80's engine around here. Thanks!!

First off, OMC did not make a 110 in 1995. The 110 was made from 1986 through 1989, when it changed to 115. They did make a 112 in 1995. The OMC models changed in 1995. Some were the older crossflow style, others that year were the newer looper variety. You need to verify just what year/type the engine is, as determined by the model number. Likely it's a crossflow type. Compression on that engine is everything. I'd take a gauge with you and have the owner crank it over while you take the compression. Should be around 100 lbs or so on each cyl. If you've got good eyes, pull the plugs and shine a pencil light inside the cyls and have a look at the piston crowns and the cyl walls. You will want to hear it run and make sure it comes up to normal operating temps (143-150) after a couple of minutes. I'd probably check the color of the oil in the lower unit. Should be a clearish liquid, perhaps amber or light green in color-not black.

Also ask if any other parts was changed as if ignition was not looked at that piston problem will appear again.....
