I just purchased a pontoon boat that has a 1995 28HP Johnson outboard on it.

The seller told me that it had not been run since late March and it started up quickly and seemed to run fairly well, however it seemed to be loading up a little bit.

I was thinking maybe it's gummed up from sitting. Is there anything that I can run through it to clean it out?

Also, does the manual for this motor happen to be online here for download?

Re: '95 Johnson 28HP

We took the boat out today for a "shakedown". I could get it to about half throttle and it ran pretty decently, other than the occassional "hiccup", however, if I tried to go past about half throttle it would bog way down and die if I didn't throttle down.

Could this also be remedied with a carb rebuild?

Would it hurt the carbs/engine if I sprayed a little bit of carb cleaner into the carbs when it was running? (hoping maybe something is just gummed up from sitting)

I rebuilt/cleaned the carbs last night and got it all put back together tonight. Got her running and took the boat out for a spin. I was able to get it up to WOT without any problems and got it up to 13MPH. Not too bad for a 24ft pontoon.
