V-6 motor, automatic. When started, it won't shift out of park. Some kind of lock out mechanism..?? Brake pedal is depressed. Is a tow job to the dealer necessary?? Thanks

Break/shift interlock switch, probably the solenoid.

There should be an overide switch/key.

I appreciate your help. The car is "stuck" in the garage. I guess with-out the "overide switch/key" , I'm stuck and destined to pay a tow truck ??? OR ??? Again, thanks

Call a Nissan dealer and find out where the overide switch is.

King,

There is no overide switch on my 95 maxima, have one with 255K miles had similar problem. Possible brake switch interlock problem (separate switch from brake lights underneath dashboard) but as Pierbridge said probably the solenoid (worn wiring or mechanical linkage). You can try pulling the console trim, cleaning out the crud and spraying the assemblies with a solvent. Unbelievable what i found down there in my wife's car. Dealer will likely recommend full shift assembly replacement..$$$.

TresGatos
