I just about to swap a 95 4.3 into my 88 with a bad 4.3. I read the flywheel won't swap off the old motor. Can anybody give me a part number or where to get a new/used flywheel. THe number on back of engine is 10235359

Re: 95 Merc 4.3 replacement flywheel

Looks like you have one of the few many call problem children do the mix up. I found the following info on your casting number
DezertDimes.com

The 10235359 blocks were the most confusing because they came with or without the two strut bosses and with either six or 10 holes for the front cover!

Consequently, all of these castings must be checked and sorted by both casting number and features in order to be sure that they will work in everything in ’93 and ’94.

1995 WITH BALANCE SHAFT: 1995 isn’t a whole lot better. All of the ’95 engines had a balance shaft and the strut bosses, but the flange around the timing gear was changed to accommodate the new plastic front cover. The overall shape stayed the same, but the flange was noticeably wider with big bulges around six of the bolt holes. See photo.

There was a mid-year change that can cause problems, too. The early engines used a “first design” tin front cover with 10 bolt holes. The later ones had the “second design” plastic cover that had only six bolts, so the flange can have either six or 10 holes drilled in it. See photo. That means that the tin cover won’t work on a block that was drilled for a plastic cover, so the blocks aren’t always interchangeable.

Things can get confusing in ’95, because the 10227196 and 10235359 castings that were used in ’95 came with the narrow flange in ’94 and were converted to the wide flange in ’95. All of the 10227196 castings had the strut bosses, but some of the earlier 10235359 castings didn’t.

There are two different flywheels for the 88 and 95 which neither are available. I would suggest mounting the flywheel you have and install the starter prior to putting it in the boat and see if there is any interference, it might work. 88 is 2229518 (replaced by 9518) and 95 is 222824320 (replaced by 824320)

I have the flywheel on and it meshes with the starter fine. I was just told that you can't mix the two because of the balance shaft.

You ask 100 people you will get 10 different answers. Especially when the people answering start out "I think ...." or "I heard ...." or "I read ...."

You have the flywheel on, then run it and see what happens. Then you will know for sure.

When you start mixing and matching flywheels, who knows what's going to happen.

As long as the flywheel, and coupler fit on as originally designed,it should be fin.i know I was screwed because mine was the year they switched rear main seals, that I know from experience has to be from the same generation,or the flywheel won't even mount to the motor.

Next question the engine coupler I have has a broken ear on it. Seeing as I scrapped the old motor I don't have the serial number anymore and I can't find a number stamped on this coupler. I looked on ebay I see ones that look the same and for same year range just don't know if they're all the same.

The coupler is listed as follows
1988 - 18643A7
1995 - 18643A5

Picture looks the same but splines may be different, would think to you the one which matches to the outdrive year

Thanks Alldodge, I looked on sierra parts website and they have coupler for the engine and its the same part number from 87-95. So I may try that or see if I can find an 88 one.
