Hello Everyone
Great site I must tell you.
I've been doing a lot of reading (thanks pops and J martin) on a common charging system failure.
I would just like a confirmation on my info and maybe a little procedure.
95 Merc 40HP 4cyl (boy I love this motor) had a voltage spike of like 15.5 to 16 volts about 3 min into it's spring start up..
Shut it off and restarted after checking things out and now it won't charge and the tach does not work.
The tach has been irratic for the past 2 or 3 years.
I cannot see a rectifier ( I might be blind ) but i appear to have the clear 5 wire regulator so i'm assuming it does both.
I tried searching for a reg check procedure and diagram as well as stator for my specific engine.
I'm thinking this reg shorted out and spiked then went down for the count.
Can someone direct me to the reg check procedure or is this a "yea she's fried throw one in " type of deal.
I appreciate your help.
Mike
