Hello Everyone
Great site I must tell you.
I've been doing a lot of reading (thanks pops and J martin) on a common charging system failure.

I would just like a confirmation on my info and maybe a little procedure.

95 Merc 40HP 4cyl (boy I love this motor) had a voltage spike of like 15.5 to 16 volts about 3 min into it's spring start up..
Shut it off and restarted after checking things out and now it won't charge and the tach does not work.
The tach has been irratic for the past 2 or 3 years.

I cannot see a rectifier ( I might be blind ) but i appear to have the clear 5 wire regulator so i'm assuming it does both.

I tried searching for a reg check procedure and diagram as well as stator for my specific engine.

I'm thinking this reg shorted out and spiked then went down for the count.

Can someone direct me to the reg check procedure or is this a "yea she's fried throw one in " type of deal.

I appreciate your help.

Mike

JUNK !!!!!!!!! LOL

I can't get more than .5 ohm out of either yellow wire and the tach lead is open circuit.

Time to make my wallet lighter

Yellow leads to Stator have continuity between both so i'm hoping all is well under the flywheel.

I'll keep you informed.
Thanks again Laddies

I think I have lucked out a little more than some here.
It's the first good news I've had in the past few days.
Thanks everyone.

Re: 95 Merc 40HP 4cyl not charging

Forgot a important situation. After i replaced the regulator assembly, it still would not charge or have a tach.
So i redid all my checks and it still pointed to the reg.
I just happen to see a old boat racing guy i haven't seen in years.
The subject of the boat came up and he said i had the right diagnosis.
And i said ok so why won't it charge. He told be like and old auto gen. and voltage regulator the reg once in a while had to be excited the first time.
I told him i haven't done a regulator like that in like 35 years plus this is electronic. He said what do you have to lose.
Well apparently i have to good a battery. My static voltage was 12.45. Yea thats what it's suppose to have.
So went to the shop and got the portable load tester.
Ran the voltage down to around 11.75 with the load tester and the trim.
started it up and bingo. i had a tach and charging.

Tach is steady and charging voltage is 14.20.

Guess it has to call for it pretty hard the first time.
Just thought i would relay this to everyone.

Fact or Fiction this is what happened.
