This motor did not have tstats, but has 130 psi all around and hasn't been run much in this warm environment since tstats removed. I replaced tstats, and notice the left side heads seem hotter to the touch than the r side. Is this normal? I would think the first tstat to open at idle on the flushette would then cool both heads(they are connected) and keep the other sides tstat from opening and resulting in a hotter side and a cooler side. Is this accurate?

I am also thinking of putting in temp senders and monitoring both side head temps on the dash. Where can you get these kinds of accessories, and is there a preferred brand? Does OMC make them? My local parts dealer has not been able to find these answers for me. Thanks

There was a post from someone this board that had a 130,one side 20-30 degrees hotter, said that he shimmed one of the thermostat to get both heads the same temp. If you find the post, bump it back to the top, I would like to reread the post.

I purchased a temp gauge and sending unit kit that connects to a head bolt at West Marine. So far it is working good.

Re: 95Johnson130 v4 temp differences

Update. I took the boat out and after 20 minutes the overheat horn went off, so I took the t'stats out. I figure that something is preventing proper heat transfer. Fish hunters story, http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=032358 , has me worried about putting the stats back in. I have some suspicions about possible causes for the overheating.

1)bad impeller doesn't supply enough pressure
2)Motor has been run in saltwater without flushing with fresh. The corrosion and scale buildup insulates cooling water from the cylinders requiring the increased water flow from removed tstats(I a assuming thet the tstats are open and the engine overheats anyway)
3) Too lean cause of clogged carbs or timing advanced
4) Boat is too heavy and motor is working at full load

I think the Rx is to get temp senders and start collecting data. There is a threaded cavity in each block half near the tstats that look like they are designed for temp senders. Can I get temp senders that fit those threaded cavities?

i had the same issue < along with FH911> <j/e 120/140>
took it into shop for a thorough check. needed new p/p
came back running great. after the 3rd time on water- it overheated.
i changed out tstats to find no vernatherms in old white housings.
put new black ones in, retorqued heads.
got real hot fast!!!!!!!
upon disassembley i found
1- one of the recirculatory fittings crimped and hose left to suck air.
2- severe corrosion in area around cylinder sleeves
3- recirculatory check valves & some fittings in need of replacement.
4- heads in need of resurfacing
5- 4 scored cylinders
6- slite grooves in impeller cup, but impeller fairly new.
why did it over heat? it had to be 1 if not all the above. but as with fh911, i too feel that the shop should have caught the tstats atleast.
