Hi!
I am a little nervous about the oil injection system on my Merc 115 ELPTO.
I was thinkin´to disconnect it ´cause a friend of mine told me that system fails sometimes; but in the other hand a mechanic told me that the system is very reliable and if i disconnect the system and make the premix by myself the MERC could be damaged ´cause at higher RPM´s it require more oil than at slo.
¿Is this true?, ¿How to confirm that everything is good with the system? also ¿How to test the oil alarm?....Thanks Guys :)

Re: 96´ MERC 115 OIL INJECTION

Hi ,
Some of the 1980's Mercury outboards did have oil injection issues.I have an '86 Mercury 175 with a new powerhead. The original powerhead was replaced because the oil injection pump failed causing damage.A new oil pump was never installed,so I pre-mix fuel. The newer 90's and 2000 models are much more reliable. As long as you maintain a 50:1 fuel/oil ratio you can't go wrong.
If your worried about the oil injection, add a little extra oil to the gas tank. Not TOO much.It will smoke more at low speeds, and you might foul a sparkplug at worst. This is usually done to new motors during the "break in" period.Think of it as extra insurance against engine damage.Get use to the way the motor sounds/runs.If it does not sound right/run right to you, suspect a problem.PS>I have not heard of any problems with '96 Merc's myself... ;)
