Re: 96 115 johnson L.U.

Hello,
I would just like to report on my on going saga of the lower unit gear problem.In no other machine sector (auto,bike,small engine) have I come across such confusion/misinformation/hearsay as I have in the (I'll say Johnson) marine industry.I have spent hours researching compatible lower units, gear sets (OEM+after market,even used),and its incredible the varying opinions of so called experts,saying should fit,I don't think so,and I've heard you can,I don't think you can,eg. I wouldn't mix after market gears with OEM gears,others say,I don't see why not.Not,yes this will fit,or,no you can't do that.I finaly found some OEM gears in a small shop 200 miles from me (lucky), OMC were back-ordered,with no eta date,and by the looks of it this is a very common gearset covering from 1978-2001,85-140hp.Has bombardier left us older johnrude owners hanging?Should I swap it for a merc/yamaha?
Thanks...........wondering

Hi Dirk....The gear sets are very available from Bomby. Not sure why you are having so much trouble finding them. You do need to be careful of aftermarket gear sets. They are all not the same when it comes to material. If it where me, and it's probably just me being a dealer, I would stick to the OEM parts when it comes to the lower unit. Then you will know you got the "right stuff".

Maybe one of the other guys will jump in with some more opinions.

ddras
I am going to join the number of :I don't think" or "it should" etc but the housing for the looper is slighty different in shape than the cross-charged unit. The ratio is the same however.

OBJ,954Winns;
I really appreciate the time you guys take to answer these postings,as I gain more experience(and experience does not come cheap!),purhaps I too can contribute,as I've learned a thing or two about lower units,many years use the same gearset,and you are the first to come right out and say the looper has a different housing,thank you.I tried finding Bomby on the net with no luck,but did manage to find OMC gears at a small marina.Are parts this hard to find in the U.S.?I'm in southern Ontario,and worried about support for my "old" 1996.
Thanks..............dd
