I originally posted this issue a couple of years ago and have been chasing it ever since.
When idling or cruising at or below half throttle there is enough of a gas smell in the exhaust that you strongly notice it if the wind is blowing the same direction your are traveling.
After motor has been sitting a few days, it is really tough to get it started. When in the water, after the first start, it starts really good every time.
From idle, hole shot bogs a bit until rpm gets to about 2,200 rpm, then she takes off. Top half of rpm range runs really good, no problem getting up to 5,000 rpm, but I do not run it that high for long.
Last time I checked the compression all 4 cylinders where within a few pounds of each other and still in factory specs.
-Lake elevation at 3,000 ft. Changed the jets to appropriate range. (Leaned it out a bit with some improvement)
-Take carbs off every spring and clean. Balance them per instructions posted on this site. The only thing I have not checked is the timing and I am pretty sure I have the floats adjusted correctly, but I have been wrong before.
- note on carbs: Idle mixture screw has very little affect on idle rpm changes.
-Replaced fuel pump in case leaking diaphragm.
Any ideas what to check next. Someone said check the reeds, but would that not cause loss of power and lean running because of blow-back? I would like some input before I start taking that apart.
