Attempting to sell late fathers 1996 Proline 231. Potential buyer came with certified boat mechanic, and took boat out.

We already knew there are issues with the boat, yet didn't realize to what extent, and the many "Minor" issue's add up to a lot of expense for any buyer, and or our family to have fixed.

The mechanic identified an Intake manifold leak, which he says was preventing the engine from making full power under load.

I don't think this is "toatally out" of my capabilities, yet I see that the distributor is way back under the transom. Is the removal of the engine the way to go, or can this be done in the boat ? It appears that the transom live well is in the way of pulling the distributor. I guess this question would have to be addressed by some one the has worked on Proline 231's and know the layout.

Another issue the mechanic stated is that the forward bilge pump isn't working, hum ? I had searched last year for a fuse box in the boat and never found it, this maybe something as simple as a fuse.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You really asking a question that only you can answer - or someone who has removed a manifold before and knows what obstacles to expect. Typically it would be easier to remove and replace a manifold with the engine in the boat. But in your case it sounds like it might be easier to remove the engine first, and then do the repairs. Either way - you are correct that the distributor has to come out in order for the manifold to be removed.

On the bilge pump - hook it directly to a hot wire from the battery and a ground and see if it runs. That will help you start tracing down the fault. (Could be a fuse, or the float switch, or the bilge switch, or a connection somewhere.... lots of possibilities).

Thanks for a starting place with the bilge pump. I guess I need to get in there and measure the distance between the distributor and the bottom of the live well above it.

Intake manifold manifold leak will either cause lean condition or leak water into the crank case.

Water in oil is easy to check. Lean condition can be checked by inspecting spark plugs. Lean condition can also cause backfire thru carb and detonation.

What symptoms are there?
