96' 60 Hp sputtering at high rpm

My 1996 Merc. 60 is not maintaining power at high rpms. Last time out I took off in the morning and it ran like a champ the whole time until I got to where I wanted to fish, I mean scary fast! But after I was done (around 11:00am and it was hot! Like 100f) I fired it up and started out. It was running just as good when it suddenly hiccupped and started sputtering. From that point on if I went past half throttle it would begin to sputter and would almost die. I tried pumping the primer bulb on the fuel line but it was solid with pressure. Tried the choke to see if it helped but it made it want to die. Seems as though it is getting plenty of fuel. I replaced the plugs and started it up again but it had the same symptoms. Any one got any ideas on this one?

If it were really 100 F outside, that might be part of the problem. Engines don't really perform too well in that kind of heat. Otherwise, based on what you told us, could be either fuel or ignition, ie. high speed stator winding. The merc. stators don't do well in the intense heat and that is when they fail. Check your stator with a multimeter.

Thanks will do. I'm pretty sure it is not the fuel as that is were I was having trouble before and have tackled almost every thing to do with it. Believe me, it was hot out there too. I will attack it tonight.

Re: 96' 60 Hp sputtering at high rpm

Another question. If the stator is failing at higher temps could it still test good when not at those temps? It has only been around mid 80?s the past week. I was just wondering since I had a similar problem with a Oldsmobile coil once doing the same thing. Cost me a lot in labor from the local mechanic who couldn?t find anything each time he looked at it. Also I understand that the trigger should be replaced along with the stator, should anything else (switch box, etc.)?

I tested the stattor and the red wire is open (will tone out and only has around 2 ohms resistance). I understand this to be the high speed side of the stator and it would make since if this was the prob. as that is were I am having trouble, at high speeds.

Sounds like you may need a new stator. I'm not aware of anyone who can repair Merc. stators. Would replace with a CDI stator (assuming you tested the stator properly). Someone else on here can probably give you the resistance values for testing.

So the blue wire measured 1400 Ohms (should be around 3500) and the red was 36 Ohms (should be 65 or so), both tested from wire to motor ground as described in the repair manual. Ordered a new stator that should be in on Friday and I am hoping this will be the grand fix!
