ok, its been about 8 years since I had a mercuiser, I did not miss them 1 bit, the ones I worked on were gen 1's. I just bought a 97 sea ray w/4.3ltr alpha set up, the more i look @ it the more I think the boat was submerged, at least partially.
the p.o bought the boat this past winter & did some work, the owner b4 him replaced the motor & some pther parts.
I need to replace some parts since the P.O did a **** poor job of it & abandoned the project midstream, i do not know exactly what he did & anything he did do, i need to go over since he clearly is not capable of doing it right. ok, let me start:
1) the shift cable needs replacing, i have the old 1 out & a snake run up to where it should go so inside the gimbal assy in the hole of the shift cable, there is a little black bushing, i have a new one but it seems that it is installed from the inside, how the heck do I get the new one in w/out pulling the motor?
can i install it from the outside in?

2) the P.O, replaced the gimbal beariing & he gave me some instructions saying it is a permalube bearing & I should replace the grease fitting w/an allen screw. is there any way to tell if it is a permalude bearing w/out pulling it back out? also is there a right & wrong way to install this bearing? I know the gen 1's had 2 holes to line up with the grease fitting ports.

3) the trimpump fluid is all milky, looks like it took on water, how should I best clean this out? do I have to remove the pump assy? can I disconnect the lines & shoot brake clean through them?

on the port side of the gimbal, there is a tiny hose that runs down & sticks out about 3" with a white fitting on the end. I trace it up & it looks like it runs to the dash assy. is it possibly an built in internal speedometer?

I found the shift boot broken( NATURALY) & all dry rotted, it is my belief that this boat was under water at least partialy, this is why the motor was replaced.

the u joints have no fitting on them, the fitting hole in the center flat area of the ujoint has a plug. can these be greased?
they have no play in them but they are both very loose, the assy flops back & forth, again, no play just sloppy.

lastly what is the deal with the ujont bellow? this is a different design from what I remember on the gen 1's. the metal ring that goes on over the bellow inside the housing. not what I remember.

for all intense purposes, I guess you can
say i am rebuilding the gimbal assy or tuning it up.

any help is appreciated.

Ayuh,... If it's a permalube, Nope, there ain't no holes...

NO,... No brake clean, just fresh oil, 'n flush it...
is it possibly an built in internal speedometer?

Ayuh,... exactly, the other tube should be stickin' up outa the lower, leadin' edge...

You should be able to remove the plugs, put in zerks, 'n grease 'em...
They'll tell ya when they need changin'...
lastly what is the deal with the ujont bellow?

Ya, that's the Gen.II improvement....

i tried to remove the plugs from the u joints & they dont budge. are you sure they are removable?

if I cant remove the plugs, what indication will i have that they need replacing. as I said, the shaft flopps around very loosely
whereas my old outdrive had new bearings in it & would stand out straight, like morning wood.

for #3, should i remove the lines from the cylinders & pump the fluid through them if the cylinders look to have clean oil? still have not checked them though.

any thoughs on the bushing in question #1?
thanks for your replies

I had the same problem with mine. I flushed them out, refilled and one time out and they were full of orange milkshake again. Likely you need to do a seal job on those rams.

Here is a picture of mine dissasembled. Not hard to do at all. I had to build a tool to get the caps off (red arrow).

I also took my pump out and washed out the resivoir and cleaned the two filters (red arrows). Then I blew the hoses out from the pump to the rams.

Works good now. No water intrusion!

Mine was an AlfaI, GenII......

OILDYNE TRIM PUMP SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 14
Page 5A-6 90-818177--3 APRIL 2001
Maintaining Power Trim Pump Oil Level
CAUTION
Avoid pump damage. Vent reservoir pressure by backing out the vent screw two
turns after tightening completely. Units without a vent screw have a vented fill cap.
Remove the fill neck seal on models without a vent screw.
IMPORTANT: Check the oil level with the stern drive unit in the full down position.
IMPORTANT: If quicksilver Power Trim and steering fluid is not available, SAE 10W-30
or 10W-40 engine oil can be used in the system.
1. Remove the fill cap, then raise and lower the drive unit 3 to 5 times to purge air from the
system. Let air settle for several minutes and then purge air again. Check the oil level
visually.
2. If there is a vent screw, it must be backed out 2 full turns. If there is no vent screw, remove
the fill neck seal to vent the pump.
3. Maintain the oil level between the ?Max? and ?Min? marks on the side of the reservoir.
Fill to the bottom lip on the fill neck.
