Hello Folks,

I am about to do my first water pump replacement and was wondering if there are any tips on reassemling the shift linkage under the carbs. It seams like there is no room to get your hands in there to attach it. Does it just snap together or is there a pin or bolt.

Thanks,

It's easier if you have the engine in reverse, before you disassemble it.

There is a bolt that conmnects the shift rod.

I have not looked at the linkage location yet but how easy is it to get a tool in there?

It's usually a 3/8" deep socket. It is threaded threw the linkage on the opposite side.

Deuce

It seems like you have to remove some hoses and things just to get a tool in there, is there any way to prevent the bolt from dropping into the lower cover?

Take the air box off, and you will see a "pull pin" that you remove. This will allow you to slide the horizontal shift shaft mechanism to port and clear the vertical shift shaft. Remove the gearcase and you are half way done! Sometimes you will also have to remove the cotter pin and washer on the arm that attaches the linkage but you'll see when you do it!!

I use a 1/4" drive set with a 12" extension and a universal.

Look real close at the cowling pan. That 1996 probably has a split pan that you can take off. Then the shift linkage will be right there accessable to you. The cowling will have 2 bolts in front and 2 in the rrear holding the halves together.

Go for the cotter pin, don't mess with that bolt. I did it the hard way (losening the bolt) the first time I did the pump. The cotter pin allows the rod to be pushed in. You may need to wiggle the shift rod with some neddle nose pliers but it sure beats messing with that bolt.

Petiboy....remove the pin. It will be on the starboard side of the engine. Loads easier. And if you need to get inthere, as Walker said, remove the four screw holding the Lower pan together and take them off. (this was one of OMC's better ideas.)
