I'm hoping someone can help me out. I've got a 96 bayliner with a force 120. It runs very good for me . . . when it does. Lately; I was running it and it cut out on me out of nowhere. I wasn't running it heavily but it acted almost like the key turned off. When I went to start it; it wouldn't start. Would turn over fine, but wouldn't start. I waited about 10-15 minutes and it started up fine. I drove it a while and turned the key off to let someone in and when I went to start it again after about 30 seconds; it wouldn't start. Waited 10 more minutes and it started. I did this for the day and went out again today. The boat started perfectly at the house to clean out the engine and when it was cold and started right up. I drove it for a little bit today and after an hour; I put it into neutral and it stalled out on me. It wouldn't start no matter how long I waited and would only give me a small attempt to start for one or two revolutions after I waited for a while. I don't know what it is.

Here is what I do know... The carbs are clean, the plugs are decently clean; little bit of carbon/oil but wiped off now, fuel bulb keeps pressure and is clean, all fuses are good, the safety switch is functional and doesn't ground out when the key is on, the stator gives me 500 ohms when read (good), the boat will try to start for a second after it sits a while but not every time, I took out the spark plugs and grounded them while turning the key and am not getting any spark from any plug from any coil pack.

Can anyone please help me?

So I charged up the battery a little bit from testing everything and went out to see if it would start up after I put the battery back in. I turned the key and within 2 seconds it fired right up. I shut it right off and tried the key again and it started right up again. I don't get it? What could it be. . . other than tempermental?

Loose wire somewhere ?

Stator starting to fail and showing symptoms when it gets hot.

Thanks. Is there any way to test out the stator?

I'm having a similar problem w/my Farce 120. It'll run fine one day and won't start the next. Turns over just fine but has weak spark, it's got fresh plugs, clean carbs and fuel. I'll be watching this one for any possible solutions.

If I'm understanding my engine; the only ignition components are the stator, trigger, coil packs, and plugs....correct? Are triggers know to usually cause problems or would that cause a bad running/missing condition? Thanks for the info.

Jan Eva - I found out the problem. It was the stator. Under the idle/light load circuit, it was shorting out causing it to not want to start. If I got it started it ran fine because the high load circuit took over and ran the engine. . . Local guy specialized in mercury/force and was explaining it to me.

So it needs a part replaced?, or needs to go to a shop for electrical work? I'll have to look in my manual for this thing. It would be awesome to get this thing running and in the water for the fourth of july!
