Ok, I was on the lake last Monday. Heading across the lake my motor made a funny sound then died. When I started it again it made a clicking sound and it would not get up on pad. The engine would rev but it seemed like it could only get to just over idle speed. I have no clue and even less money to pay a mechanic. Does anyone know what my problem is?

A good starting point would be to check compression then spark. Let us know what you find!

Does motor rev up in forward but speed doesn't increase? If so, prop hub may be spun. If motor doesn't rev up in gear, problem diagnosis first step is compression check.

Yes, that is exactly what it does. Reverse seems to be fine. How can you tell if the hub is spun? I have had someone else tell me that too (prop hub).

Props consist of a inner brass hub, and outer prop housing of aluminum or stainless steel, and a rubber hub that connects the two. Easiest way is to determine if the rubber went bad is to remove prop, make matching marks on outer prop housing and inner prop hub and run the boat. If the marks don't match, the hub is bad.

Ok, it isn't the prop. I turned the prop and there was some grinding noise in the lower unit. I changed the oil in the lower unit and there were some metal shavings.....is that bad news? bad lower unit?

grinding noises are never good........

metal shavings are worse

id no run that lower unit...you might be able to save a lot of the internals if you dont grind up all those metal shavings over and over into every parts that turns in there.

some gears are like $300 plus..maybe you havent ruined them YET...

rebuilding the lower unit, is a big project....

best to buy a good no noise used unit...or if you ahve the cash....get it rebuilt or swap yours for a rebuilt unit....

used units are going for about $500 and up...rebuilts are over $1500

I am curious why your engine stopped....unless you hit something and didnt even realize it!!!

good luck
