'96 Johnson 9.9 Coil question

A friend of mine just bought 9.9 Johnson. We think it's a '96. No Spark either cylinder. He's not sure if he wants to start throwing non-returnable expensive ignition parts at it to fix it. Are there any common issues with this motor? I was reading some of the older posts and I saw mention of coil problems on older Johnsons, but what is old?

Any help is appreciated.

No spark either cylinder is probably a charge coil or a power pack. The coils in question are mid 70's and earlier.

Charge Coil being the stator?

It also seems that the stator for this engine is very inexpensive. $15.
I bought one last year for my 25Hp Yamaha and it was $125.
