I just bought a 96 Johnson 35hp 3cyl.oil injected
outboard with manual start and controls. It starts
up and idles great.I took it for the first time and it ran good for about 20 min.s After that it started dieing at full throttle. It would go again for about 30 sec.s wide open and die again. It did this several times and then lossed power. Each time it died it happened immediately..no coughing or sputtering, and each time it restarted in one pull and idled great.Fuel and oil are fresh, plugs all burning good....Any suggestions???

Re: 96 Johnson quitting

WHen I was trying to figure out why my 88 15hp johnson wasnt running right. It was kinda doing the same thing, starting, then going to a high idle then just dieing, ran maybe all of 30 seconds at a go, and even sounded real clean wile it ran. My problem was the carberater float was stuck open and the fuel bowl was overflowing. I took it apart, cleaned it, and was in bussness.. This may or may not be your problem, but it is at least a suggestion. Mine was leaking gas out of a uper air vent on the carb, that is what lead me to the FLoat. Other things to check would be things like, is the gas can vented,( it should be ) does pumping the primer on the fuel line have a effect?( check your fuel filter and or pump ) does pumping it make the carb leak? ( float problem if this is true ) Hope this helps. if not, maybe it will help someone else

Squeezing the primer bulb didnt stop it from dieing at full throttle but, nor did loosening the cap on the fuel tank.Ill try looking into the carbs next time out, Thanks.

Checked fuel fittings and installed new filter. Any chance it could be one of the fuel pumps or the oil pump???

Is it possible that the stator or ignition module wiring could temporarily overload??

Check the complete fuel system, included the pulse hose to fuel pumps, the spring inside the hose(if this engine has one) may migrate thru the pulse fitting causing engine damage, and allow the pulse hose to close. Then check power pack. Service manual needed.

Thanks Clanton, is it possible to check the powerpack for an intermittant fault like that?

Sure, use meter with long leads, connect to ignition coil input, if that cylinder is misfiring the voltage will drop. You can also use a timing light also to find the misfiring cylinder. Good cylinder will have an even flash.
