So i recently just purchased a 96 Rinker 180 bow rider, with a 96 mercrusier 4.3 lx gen+. It starts idles great, but i get a low speed surge, just above no wake speed. If i go slower fine, faster fine. Also sometimes wont plane out but very random. most time is fine but sometimes just wont go above 2500 rpms throttle wide open. I am having a hard time with the randoness of the wide open issue but im not sure if the surging is related the surging is all the time. It also seems like the wide open issue is getting worse. Thanks in advance for any help

Re: 96 mercrusier low speed surge

Hi there, have you checked the condition of the fuel by removing the fuel filter and empty the contents into clear jar or coffee can looking for things such as debris or water in the fuel system as a starting point?

On page 1C-15, there is a list of things that will help give you an idea of possible engine surge to consider,

Good luck.:)

i tore the carb apart and found some debris in the float bowl. Large enough to i believe block the jets. Does this sound like it could cause a surge. I was able to get it to do it on the hose and after i tore the carb apart it ran fine at all rpms with no surge so fingers crossed i hope i got it

Sounds like your on the right track, and i'm sure that was the root of the problem.

Now it's time to inspect why it was in the carb in the first place and solve that problem as well before your back out floating in the same boat as earlier.;)

Good luck.:)

Sounds like it's time for a good fuel filtration system!
