96 Mercury 90hp exhaust plate gasket made of asbestos ?

Hi All! I was wondering if anyone knows if the exhaust plate gasket on a 1996 Mercury 90HP ELPTO L3 was made from asbestos! I started scraping the old one yesterday and kinda got panicked after I saw all the dust and the material itself! Thank you so much!

Maybe. But one time won't kill you.

Wear a dust mask like they give out at a doctor's office and use a water spray bottle to dampen the gasket for minimum dust. Scrape away!

Is there a way to find out up until what year they were using asbestos to make gaskets? It wore one because I used the vacuum cleaner yo clean up in my garage and it got airborne! Than you so much for your reply GA_boater!

I doubt that Mercury was using asbestos in the 1990's.----But you are correct is asking your question.
