Hey All ,
Little problem here heading out to take my son Saugeye fishing thhis weekend and last trip out the motor was dying in idle. It was starting and warming up fine but would Die at idle almost like it was set too low. I;ve had the boat (pontoon) for a few months and this is the first bit of trouble. I replaced the Plugs ,,,,Conditioned the fuel (12 gal) Tank. The motor is still dying at Idle. The throttle cable is a little stiff but has been working good untill now. I took the motor cover off and to my amazement the throttle assembly has about 6 or 7 pivot points ! I simply put a ;little pressure on the throttle cable and the motor stopped "lugging" and idledfine.... about the way an outboard should idle 5 to 700 by ear ? The tach has never worked since I bought it.
SOOOO...the local Library who got my manual shipped in Shipped it back to the main library cuz I didnt get there in 3 days and we want to go tommorow .....
Sorry for the long post but, just wondering if I can adjust the throttle at the point where it enters the cowling without any ill affect on timing/advance ? Like I said a little pressure on the cable conn. inside the cowling and the thing purrs like a kitten. This is my first Merc Force and untill I get the book monday
It;s hard docking whe it;s dying in idle... I really think with all the pivot points and stiff cable it stretched a little or caused some play.
Thanks alot !

Re: 96' Mercury Force 75 HP thottle adj help

Other people here are a lot more qualified to help but if you are leaving for a fishing trip I will try to help. On my 40 there is an idle adjustment on the throttle tower. It is a bolt with a locking nut. to increase the idle you simply loosen the locking nut and screw the bolt in until you reach the desired speed - then tighten the lock nut up. This basically increases the timing. Idle speed should bee somewhere around 800 rpm in gear at idle. You need to set the idle speed in gear while the engine is warm in the water. I hope this helps.

Hey thanks for the reply ! That would be the vertical tower ? So I'm after the timing and not gas then i take it ? so when applying pressure to make it run smooth I was actually adv/ the timing ?
Thanks for the help !
Joe.
